June 13,1991 - The International Softball Federation
announced that Women's Fastpitch was to be a full medal sport for
the first time in the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
Fall 1992 - In order to give the Canadian national team
a better chance to compete for an Olympic berth, by developing high
calibre Canadian athletes through world calibre team competition,
the Canada Cup International Women's Fastpitch Tournament was created
and a community based host committee formed.
June 22 - 27, 1993 - The first Canada Cup International
Women's Fastpitch Tournament took place at Softball City in South
Surrey, B.C. The recorded gate numbered 43,968. The first Canada Cup
Champions were the Redding Rebels.
July 11 - 17, 1994 - The second Canada Cup took
place. The recorded gate numbered 56,829. 1994 Canada Cup Champions
- The Redding Rebels.
August, 1994 - The Canadian national team clinched an Olympic
berth for the 1996 Summer Olympics at the Senior Women's World Championships
in Newfoundland, Canada.
June 19 - 25, 1995 - The third Canada Cup took place with
the gate numbered at 70,108. 1995 Canada Cup Champions were the California
Commotion.
June 16 -23, 1996 - The fourth Canada Cup, just prior to
the1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia, was an overwhelming
success with a recorded gate of 79,136 and the Canadian National Team
winning the Canada Cup Championship Trophy.
1997 - Canada Cup committee takes a year off.
June 13 - 21, 1998 - The fifth Canada Cup took place at
Softball City in South Surrey...bigger and better than ever with nine
(9) days of exciting, high calibre world class competition. The return
of the Canada Cup was a resounding success with gate attendance of
95,869!! Team Australia claimed top honors and took possession of
the Canada Cup.
July 3 – 11, 1999 - The sixth Canada Cup featured 16 teams
from all over the world -USA, Australia, Japan, China and Canada -
5 of which were 2000 Olympic qualifiers. The nine-day event at Softball
City once again drew huge crowds with the gate attendance numbered
at 100, 419! Australia and Team USA Gold faced each other in heated
competition in the final - with a homerun clinching the win. The final
score - 1 - 0 Team USA Gold.
July 1 – 9, 2000 - With 5 of the 8 Sydney Olympic qualifiers
competing in the 2000 edition of the Canada Cup (Australia, Japan,
China, Canada and New Zealand) plus other high quality teams, the
competition for the Canada Cup was intense. In the end, it was Australia
and China competing in the final with Australia claiming top honors.
The score - 7 - 0 Australia. The 2000 Canada Cup set another gate
attendance record of 109,814!
June 30 - July 8, 2001 - The 8th Canada Cup took
place with eighteen teams from all over the globe bringing simply
great softball to Softball City, Surrey, B.C. Canada. It was nine
days of exciting world class competition with Japan (Red) winning
the championship final with a score of 6-1 over Australia. The 2001
Canada Cup gate attendance reached 110,346.
July 13 - 21, 2002 - The 2002 Canada Cup was
a record-breaker with more spectators, more teams, more tournaments
and more countries participating than in any other year in the Canada
Cup's nine-year history. It was a summer showdown with the USA World
claiming the Women's event over USA Elite with a score of 4-0. Total
gate attendance for the 2002 event - 122,504.
July 5 - 13, 2003 - The 10th Canada Cup was set
for a summer gold rush with many top world teams ready to stake their
claim on the Women's championship trophy. It was the USA Elite team
that proclaimed the Canada Cup as their own when they won a highly
competitive final at the bottom of the 10th inning over Australia
with a 2 run game winning home run. USA Elite - 2 Australia - 0. A
large crowd weathered rain, cloud and drizzle to watch softball that
dazzled. Despite the inclement weather over championship weekend,
Canada Cup 2003 over the nine-day tournament recorded an impressive
gate of 113,916!
July 3 - 11, 2004 - The 11th Canada Cup showcased, as always, top notch international competition including a number of teams preparing for 2004 Olympic competition in Athens , Greece . In the end it was Japan and Australia in the Canada Cup final that included spectacular “had to see to believe” plays right down to the last out. Japan emerged the victor over Australia with a score of Japan – 2, Australia – 1. Canada Cup 2004 gate attendance – 91,201.
July 2 – 10, 2005 - The 12th Canada Cup took place with many top world teams competing. Australia took top honors defeating USA Elite 3 – 0. 2005 gate attendance was recorded at 105,856.
July 1 – 9, 2006 – The 13th Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament featured some of the most intense, “edge of your seat” moments in Canada Cup history as a number of top world teams prepared for the 2006 Women’s World Championships in Beijing, China. Team Canada made the final for the first time since 1996 and faced the 2005 Canada Cup defending champions, Australia. It was thrilling softball action with Australia repeating their right to take home the Canada Cup trophy by defeating Canada 6-4. 2006 gate attendance was recorded at 112,676.
June 30 – July 8, 2007 –The 14th Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament was yet again another exciting international softball event, with teams competing from around the world! Team USA took home the Canada Cup Championship trophy, by defeating Japan 5-0 in the final! The Canada Cup gate attendance for 2007 was 119,301.
July 12 – 20, 2008 – The 15th Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament featured five of the top eight Olympic teams as they prepared for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Japan took home the Championship trophy with a 4-2 victory over Australia. Gate attendance for 2008 was 102,647.
July 4 – 12, 2009 – The 16th Canada Cup battled the elements, including everything from intense heat to rain delays to a shivering cold championship final, but nothing could faze the championship spirit of the two teams in the last game – the USA and Canada – who fought right to the end to stake their claim on the 2009 Canada Cup. After the last play it was the USA defeating Canada 3 – 2 in a nail biting final that left the crowd spellbound and amazed.
